Tai Chi

Demonstrated by Mrs A. T. Short 7th Dan

Tai Chi is a form of meditation and martial art which originated in China thousands of years ago. It is based on first learning to feel then to direct an energy known as "Chi". While your body is obviously used, a major part of Tai Chi is the directing of energy inside the body with your mind. "Where mind goes Chi follows." The "internals" are generally taught after you have mastered the external moves.

An ancient form of 18 movements was studied that aids problems such as high blood pressure, backache, depression etc. The movements involve stretching certain meridians to balance the bodys energy patterns.

Chi Kung Energy Work

Demonstrated by Mrs A. T. Short 7th Dan

Chi kung is the art of developing vital energy particularly for health, vitality, mind expansion and spiritual cultivation.

There are many wonderful benefits derived from practising chi kung, and they may be generalized into the following five categories:

  1. Curing illness and promoting health.
  2. Enhancing vitality and developing internal force.
  3. Promoting youthfulness and longevity.
  4. Expanding the mind and the intellect.
  5. Spiritual cultivation.

Ju Jitsu Demonstration

Demonstrated by Nanette Rogers, Neil Till, Stephen Dudley, John Eagan, Stacey Eagan and Katrina Eagan

6ft Staff Demonstration

Demonstrated by Ricky Robson and Laurence Newton

The Chinese staff, is one of the earliest tools to be used by man. Initially it may have been merely a sapling or a long, straight branch which was used for hunting animals for sources of food or fur hides. The wooden staff also facilitated passage over rugged and mountainous terrain. In an agrarian setting it served as a multi-purpose tool for planting crops, carrying supplies, and transporting buckets of water for the irrigation of crops.

In the ancient records of Chinese martial arts, the 6ft staff is discussed as the first weapon taught to the Zen Buddhist disciples who studied at the Shaolin Temple. There are literary and pictorial references to Bodhidharma carrying a 6ft staff on his journeys as he taught Zen Buddhism in the regions near the Shaolin Temple.

The Chinese staff syllabus teaches a range of Shaolin techniques that range from simple holds to advanced forms.
